Reference and thumbnail photos in progress photos The goal for this project is to show the light reflecting on a transparent surface
(that's not glass). So I tried to crop the reference to to have the subject show more in the composition.

For this exercise we learned how to draw things wrapped in plastic, by drawing the extreme highlights first and then going in with the other values.
For the last apple drawing we got to use pastel pencils and I liked those a lot better but the problem with using the pencils is that they are compressed and don't smudge well and we only had five to work with.
So in the future if I were to continue using all of these mediums in the future I would use the chalk for the base of the drawing, the shadows, and maybe the highlight but I would use the pencils for everything else to create a sharper image and line. Also I liked how the yellow spots showed up when I used the pencils. Describe how you created an interesting point of view? Was it successful? Why or why not? The pov is shot from below and the lanterns move the eye out. This project is unsuccessful because it is unfinished Why is it important to understand perspective and how to draw it? It is important to learn perspective because it helps you add depth in your drawings and its a valued skill to have because its so difficult to learn. How were the colored pencil exercises important in the success of your piece? The exercises taught me how to blend and use the medium. Describe the craftsmanship of your colored pencil. What techniques were used? (How well the project is technically crafted). Its ok in the craftsmanship department nothing really sticks out about the finished parts. I learned how to draw the lights on the lantern later into the project so the lantern on top looks better and brighter than the second one. Were you able to achieve depth by showing a foreground, middle ground and back- ground? Explain. I used the structure of the ceiling in my picture and spaced the bars closer together as they went back into space. Also the lanterns get smaller the farther back you go. Explain your experience with colored pencil and the project in general. What were the obstacles and advantages? It was difficult trying to get some of the smaller details in this drawing such as the little lights and I even made the lantern on the top bigger just so I could color it better so if I could do this drawing again I would use a larger paper. The advantages of this medium is that the prismacolor really expresses the vivid color of the lanterns. Looking back on the progression of this project what skills, techniques or other information would you like to have been taught? Do you feel you were prepared for this project? I felt prepared when it came to perspective and how it worked i just wish I knew what to work on first. I should have worked on the perspective of the ceiling and then drew the lanterns Describe the craftsmanship of your drawing. (Is it clear, clean edges, blended well, smudges, defined space, etc.)
I spent most of the time making an accurate sketch so that the shading process would be less frustrating for me, because I've had experiences with shading and seeing a bunch of mistakes that I didn't see in the sketching stage. Then i shaded using my lightest pencil and building up in layers. Are your values and shadows realistic? How many values did you include? How and why are values important? I needed to use different ranges for different objects so you could tell them apart because if everything is shaded with the same 4 pencils then your piece starts to look bland. Is there a clear source of lighting? Yes I used the same light source How important were the compositional sketches? Explain. They helped me figure out which part of the composition I wanted to draw and it's always a good idea to plan ahead How is your final drawing successful? Its not, its unfinished. Are the proportions, structure and perspective of the subject correct? Yes most of my time was spent on just proportions. Does the placement & grouping of objects create a pleasing arrangement (composition)? I believe so it was interesting to draw those three main objects of the composition and Is there a center of interest and is it well located? There is no center of interest How well did you manage your time and resources throughout the process of creating this drawing? Do you see where you could improve in this area? I drew everyday during class time and even stayed during lunch on some occasions but I failed to use the time I had to draw at home very efficiently. I was so behind that completing the project seemed hopeless but I see now that if I had continued to draw consistently at home then I could have finished it. Yes I do see where I can improve in this area. What challenges did you encounter during this project and how did you overcome them? Finishing was a huge challenge that I did not overcome on time What have you learned drawing a still life? I've learned a little bit more about composition and I know now that it's something that I want to learn more about in the future. |
